Executive Director's Welcome

Interim Karl Birnstein

Welcome to Lutheran High School of Kansas City, where we are intent on preparing the next generation of Christian leaders. In order to do that, we focus on four major educational components in your student's life. First, we endeavor to help them grow spiritually-and while knowledge of religion is important, how they apply that body of knowledge into their daily life is what we really strive to help them to understand. Of course, secondly is their growth in the academic realm. We believe that each student is unique and each possesses his or her own learning style-teaching students to know how they learn best is a skill that students carry forward no matter where they go in life. Next we wish to help your students to grow socially. With all of the pressures that teens face in the 21st century, being able to respond in a Christ-centered environment will allow them to have the support of faculty, staff and Christian friends that can encourage during the struggles and celebrate with the joys in their lives. Lastly, we work to challenge your student to get involved in our co-curricular offerings. From the Fine Arts to Drama to Athletics; in groups like the National Honor Society, Academic Team and Student Council, we believe that students who are involved are well-rounded and their education is balanced. The family atmosphere and beautiful campus are indicators of a safe learning environment that helps to cultivate each student's potential-their potential to become Christian leaders at school, at home and within their community. Please tour our website, but even more importantly, please call the school so we can plan your visit!

The Knightly News-a blog from the Executive Director

So why does this new guy want to write a blog? Well, in many years of presenting chapels to students, I've learned that quite often my message is a reflection of something that I need to be aware of or that I would like to refocus my efforts upon. But recently I also read that a blog can be the way in which one can build a community...

Giving Opportunities

Lutheran High School of Kansas City wants to educate every student possible. Through the use of the opportunities listed, we have been able to bring financial stability to our school while keeping our tuition rates within the range of most families. As you review this list, remember that sharing the message of Christ's love is the ultimate result of every category. Our God blesses us every day. We believe that God's special blessings have placed us on our new campus. As we recognize His blessings, we recognize that His purpose is to further His Kingdom on earth. Lutheran High School is His gift to greater Kansas City. Now it is our turn to bless it in His name.

Alpha 500

Alpha 500 is dedicated to building a group of 500 regular monthly donors to the school. Donors begin with a $50 monthly minimum donation for 12 months. By using a monthly format, donors can typically give a larger amount each year. During the month of August, donors receive 12 envelopes in which to place their gifts. However, contributions to Alpha 500 can start at any time during the year.

Capital Campaign

The capital campaign entitled "Blessing Educational Excellence" began during the 2005-06 school year to purchase a new campus for LHSKC at 12411 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri. The purchase was completed on June 30, 2006. The second phase of the capital campaign is called "Advancing the Vision." The goal of "Advancing the Vision" is to raise $2.5 million to pay off the mortgage and upgrade the campus to support the high school's curricular and extra-curricular needs. Financial gifts of all types are encouraged along with one-to three year pledges. All gifts to the campaign are used to retire the debt and enhance the school. Administrative costs are not deducted by decision and guarantee from the Board of Directors.

S.O.S. - Sponsor Our Students

Sponsor Our Students is used to assist a family when a job has been lost in the middle of the year or illness has created financial stress in the home. LHS leadership will award donated funds to a family in verified financial need, but the donor will not know. Donors giving more than $500 during a school year will have their names listed on a perpetual plaque currently on display in the school.

Special Scholarship Fund

These funds are given by an individual for the benefit of a particular student or students with or without the family's knowledge. The donor may wish to remain anonymous; however, the student's family will be notified of the amount of the gift received on his or her behalf.

Unrestricted Gifts

Helping families afford an LHSKC education can take many forms. An unrestricted gift to the school permits the school to decide where it needs funds most urgently.

Grant-in-Aid

Each year a family may apply for grant-in-aid to assist them with their student's tuition. Applications are obtained from the school office, completed in full, and returned to the school for evaluation by a committee of the school administration and a member of the Board of Directors. All information is kept in the strictest confidence. Families must complete their applications and submit them by the annual deadline, typically May.

End-of-the-Year-Appeal

Each year a holiday mailing is sent to our donors in November to generate some additional income at the time of our Savior's birth and gift-giving throughout the United States.

Faculty and Staff Christmas Bonus Appeal

Our dedicated faculty and staff work at lower salaries than their counterparts in public schools. They choose to work at LHS because they are able to witness daily to the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. At Christmas time the families of our students or anyone else can give a special thank you by sending a gift to the school. The total amount received is divided among the staff to make their Christmas as merry as possible. The greater the total received, the greater the gift to the faculty and staff.

Annual Golf Tournament

The golf tournament has been staged for the last 19 years. This is a wonderful opportunity to join in fellowship at one of Kansas City's outstanding golf courses. After playing a round of 18 holes, we lunch together and take part in a raffle. Prizes are awarded for outstanding and memorable golfing feats exhibited at the event. Churches are encouraged to enter foursomes and compete for the traveling Congregational Trophy.

Annual School Auction

The largest of the LHS fundraisers, "An Affair of the Heart," the annual school auction, is held in April. We believe many people believe in the mission of LHS and carry its success in their hearts. This grand event includes dinner, silent auction, live auction and The Knights Table.

Memorial

Often a family will designate Lutheran High School to receive memorial contributions at the passing of a friend or loved one. These gifts can be designated for a particular fund or to the general fund of the school. With each gift a card is sent to the family indicating the donor of the gift.

Restricted Gifts

Gifts are given to individual school activities or directed tuition assistance will be reserved for that activity or individual. For example, a donor may wish to enhance the science department. A gift given to the department would be reserved and used only to build the science program. The donor may wish to collaborate with the instructors and administrators to pinpoint a specific need to be met.
