Course Summary: This course will give students the opportunity to read different works of literature surrounding the Christian faith. Why did certain authors choose to present their faith in the form of fiction? We will examine the relationship between written works and how they help us delve deeper into basic human questions of faith, identity, ethics, spirituality, purpose, truth, etc.

Goals/Objectives: Throughout this course, students will…

  • Develop writing skills through daily journal exercises
  • Continue to develop reading capabilities
  • Identify, study, and compare literary techniques in works 
  • Create different types of writing
  • Learn to produce logical and coherent writing
  • Carefully observe a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as the social and historical values it reflects and embodies

     

  • Develop an appreciation of different genres of literature
  • READ, comprehend and discuss works we study

Unit 1 – C.S. Lewis

 The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

  • Purpose: Using this novel to deepen students’ understanding of the Christian faith. What allegorical elements are involved?
  • Temptation, sin, betrayal, hope, forgiveness, resurrection
    • Drawing parallels between the Bible and Narnia
    • Reflect on how Christian beliefs act as a guide in life
    • Challenges of temptation and how we deal with them

    Policies:

  • Electronics: In order to keep students engaged and have less distractions students will place phones and headphones in the pockets in the classroom. We will abide by what administration said in the school handbook.

     

  • Late Work: Late work will have a negative impact on student grades. Due dates will be clearly communicated. Students not completing work by the due date will receive a reduction in score. Absences due to illness, emergency, etc. will be given additional time to complete assignments as determined on a case-by-case basis. 
  • Academic Honesty: Every student will be expected to produce his or her OWN work. Plagiarism can take many forms. Please ask any questions about citing works, websites, people, etc. to avoid this infraction.

     

  • Extra Credit: I do not offer extra credit in this course. However, I do allow students to redo writing assignments to improve their work and possibly their grade on the given assignment.
